Dr. Brian Schwartz — Keynote Speaker

Dr. Brian Schwartz specializes in cardiology with an interest in general, invasive, and interventional cardiology. He is also active in peripheral vascular disease. He earned his medical degree from Loma Linda University. He is board certified in cardiovascular diseases, interventional cardiology and has completed fellowship training in peripheral vascular diseases. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and is the chief of Cardiac Services for the Kettering Health Network. Schwartz offers the Watchman™ procedure that reduces the risk of stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. This procedure eliminates the need for long-term use of anticoagulants (blood thinners). Schwartz is currently president of AMEN and chairs the 1888 Message Study Committee. He and his wife, Lyndi, travel the world to do medical missions and evangelism. Lyndi grew up in Walla Walla and is the program director for internal medicine residency at Kettering Hospital.


Dr. Richard Hart

Richard Hart is the president of Loma Linda University Health, a post he has held since 2008. In this role, he oversees operations of the organization’s eight schools and six hospitals, as well as collaborative and consulting relationships with organizations worldwide. Hart has served Loma Linda University Health since 1972, including serving as chair of the School of Public Health’s Department of Health Sciences, director of the Center for Health Promotion, chair of the School of Medicine’s Department of Preventive Medicine, dean of the School of Public Health, and president (previously chancellor) and CEO of the University. Hart’s visionary leadership was key in the development of the organization’s San Bernardino campus, which opened in 2016 and is a major Loma Linda University Health initiative to improve the health and education of the San Bernardino region. He is also president of Adventist Health International, a management consulting organization for Seventh-day Adventist hospitals and clinics in developing countries. In addition, he is a consultant to the World Health Organization, has established health promotion services in numerous hospitals, and was responsible for developing the national health plan for the Marshall Islands under the U.S. Department of the Interior. Hart also served as a consultant in Tanzania in the 1970s, first working as the head of the community health department at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre and later as chief of party for the Ministry of Health based in Dar es Salaam. As a student at Loma Linda University, Hart’s early involvement in student missionary work was key in the development of Students for International Mission Service and Social Action Community Health System — a local low-cost health care system for the medically underserved that operates to this day. He holds a doctor of medicine degree from Loma Linda University, a doctorate of public health from Johns Hopkins University, and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Walla Walla University.


Dr. John Kelly

Dr. John Kelly is passionate about lifestyle medicine. Kelly completed his undergraduate education in biochemistry and molecular biology at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude as a McMurran Scholar. He then completed the dual degree program at Loma Linda University, receiving his MD in 2000, and his MPH in epidemiology in 2002 with honors. He completed residency training in preventive medicine in 2003 and received ABPM board certification in January 2004. Kelly was also trained in massage and hydrotherapy by Dr. Charles Thomas, a master of physical medicine known for hydrotherapy expertise. 

 Kelly received the American Medical Association’s Excellence in Medicine Award in 2004 as a young physician for his leadership as founding president of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, the medical specialty society for clinicians who specialize in the use of therapeutic lifestyle interventions in the treatment and management of disease. After completing medical training Kelly accepted an appointment as assistant research professor in the nutrition department at Loma Linda University with the lifestyle research initiative. He conducted a multi-center outcomes analysis of lifestyle centers in the U.S. and served as Co-PI for a multi-$million diabetes research project in the Marshall Islands. He continues to work with ongoing studies investigating the use of therapeutic lifestyle interventions in the treatment and management of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and related chronic diseases. He has served as medical director for lifestyle programs in Maryland, Virginia, South Dakota and Michigan. He now serves as president and medical director for the Oak Haven Health and Country Life Natural Foods center where he conducts clinical training in intensive Lifestyle Medicine for licensed medical professionals. Kelly enjoys sharing the scientific evidence for the use of lifestyle to treat and prevent disease with his patients, other practitioners, researchers and the public. He gives invited expert presentations on lifestyle medicine, epigenetics, and other topics internationally. He co-authored the LM Board Review Course. He serves as a lifestyle medicine expert consultant, and chairs the Expert LM Panel. Other interests include family life, Christian ministry, agriculture, hiking and camping, computing, and the origin of life. 


Pastor Ron Kelly

Ron Kelly is the senior pastor at the Village Seventh-day Adventist Church in Berrien Springs Michigan. He married to Collene, an elementary school teacher, and together, they have four children. Ron enjoys wilderness canoe trips, mission travel and working with his family and friends.
